A Quick Glance at Barcelona |
Barcelona is one of the most popular destinations in Spain for
tourists, famed for its unique and splendid architecture and
plenitude of activities for visitors to indulge in. Complete with
world-class restaurants and an abundance of shopping options,
Barcelona is also a cultural paradise with some of Spain’s most
impressive architecture and a good selection of museums, theatres
and galleries to choose from. There are literally hundreds of sites
to visit and Barcelona is a place that can easily keep tourists
occupied for anything from a weekend visit to several weeks.
Les Rambles is one area of the city which is extremely popular, a
downtown street famed for its café culture, souvenir shops and
colorful market stands. Any tourist will find something of interest
here, and it provides a great place to have an evening stroll,
especially during the summer months when the temperatures cool down
a bit. The area is also home to some of Barcelona’s best restaurants
and some great nightlife venues. Another area nearby is called Plaça
Reial, home to many bars and restaurants. This area is also home to
the unique and impressive work of architectural genius, Antoni Gaudi.
Barri Gòtic is another area of the city that has a lot to offer.
This medieval quarter of this ancient city is home to impressive
Gothic architecture and a great choice of cafes, restaurants and
tapas bars. Picasso’s old favorite can also be found here, a place
called Els Quatre Gats. The area by the waterfront is also very
pleasant since it has undergone considerable improvements and
tidying up in recent years. Nearby you can also find the beaches,
great for some swimming and sunbathing in the often extremely hot
summer temperatures. Indeed, the best time to visit Barcelona for
sightseeing is just before or just after the summer when the weather
is often still sunny but much more moderate.
Barcelona, though of course in Spain, is the most significant city
of Catalonia, an area of Spain that very much has its own distinct
culture and national spirit. Although virtually all people in
Barcelona speak Spanish as well these days, Catalan is the first
language of most of its inhabitants. Catalan is not mutually
intelligible with Spanish. For tourists who only speak English,
travel to Barcelona, as to most other destinations in Spain, can be
a little frustrating and tourists would do well to learn a few basic
words and phrases before heading off. English is not widely spoken
at all.
Travel to Barcelona is cheap and easy from many places in Europe as
it is served by various budget airlines with multiple daily flights
from airports all over Europe. The best time to visit is Spring,
when there are fewer tourists and the weather is much more
appropriate for exploring. The summers can be intensely hot, making
it quite unbearable for walking around sightseeing for most people. |
